In this month’s dashcam video, I mentioned an incident involving a Flying Cement Mixer. This is that story.
In 2007, I was heading south on 16th St. in my 1997 Acura Integra. I stopped at the red light on Bethany Home Rd. At that intersection, there is a left turn lane, and two straight lanes. I was in the #2 lane (the right hand straight lane); a working pickup was in the #1 lane (left hand straight lane). The pavement in the intersection had been stripped & grinded for repaving. As a result, there was 2″ dip going into the intersection, and a corresponding 2″ rise exiting the opposite side of the intersection.
The light turned green.
The work truck accelerated a bit quicker than I did, so as I approached the opposite side, the cement mixer he was pulling hit the lip and bounced several feet into the air. Everything started moving in slow motion.
I saw the cement mixer rise into the air, angling to the right, and gravel / asphalt fly out. I remember thinking, “This is going to suck.”
Naturally, the gravel / asphalt was first to hit my car, splattering across the windshield. Next to impact was the cement mixer itself, which luckily landed on my left front quarterpanel. Miraculously, my windshield did not shatter. Not only did the cement mixer not total my car, it was still drivable!
We pulled over behind where the Dunkin’ Donut is now, called 911, exchanged info, etc. Cops cited him, and his insurance paid for my damage.
Long story short: Acura builds solid cars.
Doubt me? Here is my 2013 Acura RDX getting rear-ended in 2019.
