Sharpsburg & Ferry Hill

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, MP 71-74

Drooping star-of-Bethlehem, purposefully timed to capture the passing bikes. Tried burst mode, filmed it instead, so this is a video still.

Short walk on the C&O Canal from Lock 38 east to Conococheague Sportsman Club, back to Lock 38, then north ⅔ mile around Ferry Hill. After almost 42 years, it was my first actual hike with my son.

I spent much of the time pointing out the various flower species: There were plenty of Virginia bluebell, Eastern spring beauty and Dutchman’s breeches (most I’ve ever seen). Plus common blue violet, fat dandelions, grape hyacinth, purple dead nettle, bloodroot and Persian speedwell. Also lots of drooping star-of-Bethlehem, which apparently is an invasive species.

Lock 38 Directions: From I-70, take exit 29 south onto Sharpsburg Pike MD-65. Head 10.5 miles south to Sharpsburg. Turn right on Main St. In 3 miles, just before crossing the Potomac River, turn left onto Canal Rd. In ¼ mile, at the bottom of the hill, park at the Lock 38 Trailhead.
