It’s been over a year since I hiked North Mountain. Most of my during-the-week exercise has been biking around Sunnyslope. I decided to get back in the North Mountain saddle, as I plan to resume day hiking the Appalachian Trail this spring, and the first section up on my list has a profile that fits North Mountain: 200-200-400-400-200-400.
Norh Mountain, from 7th St. to where the dirt trail comes in from the south parking is 205 ft. in 0.30 miles. From that point to the next dirt side patch / breather spot / viewing area, is 180 ft. in another 0.26 miles.
Those distances and gains are very similar. So, to train myself up, I plan once a week until I leave, to hike intervals up North Mountain, adding segments to match.
Week 1: 200–200–200–400 (today)
Week 2: 200–200–400–200–200
Week 3: 200–200–400–200–200–400
Week 4: 200–200–400–400–200–400 (repeat subsequent weeks)
I’m taking it slow & steady. A bit slower each segment, but roughly speaking, a 200 ft. round trip is 0.6 miles in about 14 minutes. A 400 ft. round trip is 1.1 miles in about 26 minutes.
Distance: 4.05 mi.
AEG: 1093 ft.
Time: 1h 30m
