Wanted to do something close to town that would give me time to get to Turf Paradise by 11:30. (Even though the local horse season does not start until October, they still do simulcast from all over the country.) I haven’t been to Deem Hills before, so that’s what I chose. I hiked Circumference Trail as a figure-8, with the southeast portion heading west up Palisade Trail, rather than down low nearer the neighborhood. Walked the first mile chatting with the male half of a married couple, whose wife was trail running up ahead of us. Nice folks. Starting at the east trailhead was a good idea, as there is no bathroom there, meaning the bathroom at Deem Hills Park was at the halfway point. If I had started at the park, I would have had to hold the #1 for an extra hour, as there are no hideaways where one can sneakily do one’s business without risking a sex criminal record. Fair amount of elevation gain for a small suburban park. Oh, and did very well at the track. My other best day also immediately followed a hike. I may have to try that strategy more often … 😉
Deem Hills East Trailhead: From I-17, take exit 218 west, onto Happy Valley Rd. In 1.0 miles, turn right onto 35th Ave., which becomes Pocono Way. In 1.5 miles, turn left on Pinnacle Vista Dr. At the end of the road, curve right onto 39th Ave., then make a quick left into the trailhead.
