  • MFLS Fantasy League:  unclean sheets  are the 2009 MFLS Fantasy League champions. unclean sheets (631/+23), who were third heading into the final week, leaped ahead of Dynamo Kyiv YCK (624/-8) who had held a seemingly insurmountable lead of 18 points over then second SDFC Macross, and a huge 24 over the unclean sheets. The champions and Dynamo are followed by FC Taureau-trois-graines (594/+8) up a spot, Mohawks FC (594/+12) up a spot, SDFC Macross (588/-23) — YES, THEY LOST 23 POINTS!!! — down three spots, Szylx (588/+14) up three spots, Lowbrow Wanderers SC (586/+10), FC Clockwork Orange (582/+4) down two spots, and ManaMana (573/+5) down a spot. We all know who had the lowest score of the week, and maybe of all time in MFLS, but the final week’s high score of 48 goes to — not surprisingly in the always iffy end of MLS season — an abandoned team.
  • MFLS Prediction League:  Hotspur  are the 2009 MFLS Prediction League champions, for an unprecedented second year in a row, giving them three out of the four biggest MFLS prizes the last two years. (To go with last year’s unprecedented fantasy-prediction double.) Hotspur (487/+18), who were never really troubled, are followed by Dynamo Salem (466/+20) up four big spots, Clockwork Orange (464/+14), Glorydaze (462/+20) up three spots, Dynamo Silver Spring (461/+9) down three spots, Zman Union (461/+18) up a spot, Alpine Dream (460/+12) down three spots, FC Opie (456/+25) up four big spots, Chisquito USA (450/+17) up a spot, and Rabid Wolverines (448/+20) up four big spots. Very rare to have that many big moves at the end of a prediction season. High score this week was 25 by the quartet of FC Opie, The Busdrivers (who finished #12 overall), Arla in USA (#42), and Rising Dough (#90).
  • Miklos Feher Cup:  Mohawks FC  are the 2009 BCFA Fantasy League champions, hoisting the Miklos Feher Cup for the first time. (They had not even won it in the old NPL.) Mohawks FC (594/+8) are followed by Clockwork Orange (582/+4), Cánicas A.C. (571/+15) up two spots, Geckos (570/+3), Phoenix TS (569/+1), Weirder Bremen (562/+22) up two spots, Darcian Greywacke (560/+6) down a spot, Glorydaze (550/+5) down a spot, Dynamo Silver Spring (537/+15) up a spot, and Dumpley Street Morons (532/+5).Brew City placed a record-shattering 15 teams in MFLS Top 100, for an even more amazing 37 ADPR. The honorees are #3 Mohawks FC, #8 Clockwork Orange, #11 Cánicas A.C., #12 Geckos, #13 Phoenix TS, #19 Weirder Bremen, #20 Darcian Greywacke, #24 Glorydaze, #28 Dynamo Silver Spring, #32 Dumpley Street Morons, #39 Alewive FC, #62 Top Shelf, #72 Arrows S.C., #85 Mike’s Ninja Turtles, and #92 Surreywood Rangers.”Congratulations to Brew City on a thoroughly dominating performance. BCFA finished with a 37 ADPR, a full 12 points higher than the previous record which they set in 2006. This is Brew City’s 4th consecutive ADPR title and 6th title in the 7 years I have been tracking the ADPR. Brew City finished with 15 teams in the top-100, 11 in the top-50 and 8 in the top-25. Their 37/31 ADPR/Membership ratio is the highest recorded for a division larger than 4 members (in 2006 Bobo Liga had a 6/4 ratio and in 2008 Spain Is Different had a 7/3 ratio). Prior to this season, other than those 2 mentioned small divisions, no division other than 2006 Brew City (25/24) had exceeded a ratio of 1.” — Alpine Dream, ADPR Commissioner
  • John Thomson Cup:  Clockwork Orange  are the BCFA Prediction League champions. Clockwork Orange added the John Thomson Cup to their 2008 NPL prediction title. Clockwork Orange (464/+12) are followed by Glorydaze (462/+20) up a spot, Dynamo Silver Spring (461/+9) down two spots, Top Shelf (444/+17) up a spot, Sehome Mariners (439/+5) down a spot, Alewive FC (428/+9) down a spot, Surreywood Rangers (426/+11) down a spot, Darcian Greywacke (411/+9), and Dudley Street Hooligans (407/+16).Brew City also broke prediction records this year, putting a all-time best 16 teams in the MFLS Top 100, for a record 33 PLPR. The honorees are #3 Clockwork Orange, #4 Glorydaze, #5 Dynamo Silver Spring, #13 Top Shelf, #19 Sehome Mariners, #21 Dumpley Street Morons, #27 Alewive FC, #31 Surreywood Rangers, #53 Darcian Greywacke, #61 Dudley Street Hooligans, #77 Shaolin, #78 Mohawks FC, #80 Weirder Bremen, #83 Duck Butter Bandits, #95 Arrows S.C., and #99 Mike’s Ninja Turtles.Brew City and La Armada “… exceeded the prior best for number of teams in the top 100 (Brew City had eight in 2008). In addition, the 33, 24, and 22 points put up by Brew City, USA vs WORLD, and La Armada, respectively, exceeds the old record for highest season ending PLPR point total that has stood since 2004(AAPL). AAPL finishes in a distant fourth, and The Nordecke Crew Fans is fifth with three rankings consisting only of fours and ones (14, 14, and 41). Seven other divisions fill out the table with 5 or 6 points.” —SDFC Macross, PLPR Commissioner
  • Cánicas A.C. (25 points/21st place) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (19-Oct-2009 : Week 31)

  • MFLS Fantasy League: Dynamo Kyiv YCK (632/+16) look all but certain to take the title as second place SDFC Macross (614/+20) were only able to narrow the gap by four points. They are followed by unclean sheets (608/+15), Mohawks FC (586/+12), FC Taureau-trois-graines (586/+14), Clockwork Orange (578/+9), Lowbrow Wanderers SC (576/+10), Szylx (574/+21) up four big spots, Phoenix TS (568/+13) up two spots, and ManaMana (568/+12) up a spot. With the fantasy season limping to its normal regular season conclusion, this week’s high score of 33 was naturally scored by an abandoned team.
  • MFLS Prediction League: There was some whopping huge prediction scores this week, but none large enough to unduly concern leaders Hotspur (469/+18). The battle for runnerup is closer as there is a new #2: Dynamo Silver Spring (452/+26) up three spots. They are followed by Clockwork Orange (450/+18), Alpine Dream (448/+14) down two spots, Dynamo Salem (446/+19) down a spot, Zman Union (443/+18), Glorydaze (442/+23) up a spot, Sehome Mariners (434/+28) up a huge six spots, CrewDuty (434/+13) down a spot, Giggity (433/+15) down a spot, and Chisquito USA (433/+17). High score this week was 35 by Darcian Greywacke.
  • Miklos Feher Cup: Mohawks FC (586/+12) extended their narrow fantasy lead by three points over second place Clockwork Orange (578/+9). They are followed by Phoenix TS (568/+13) up a spot, Geckos (567/+7) down a spot, Cánicas A.C. (556/+25) up a spot, Darcian Greywacke (554/+11) down a spot, Glorydaze (545/+14) down a spot, Weirder Bremen (540/+9) down two spots, Dumpley Street Morons (527/+5), and Dynamo Silver Spring (522/+4) — who are in danger of being knocked from the top ten by #11 Alewive FC (514/+20).
  • John Thomson Cup: Dynamo Silver Spring (452/+26) assumed the prediction lead over former leader Clockwork Orange (450/+18). They are followed by Glorydaze (442/+23), Sehome Mariners (434/+28), Top Shelf (427/+26), Alewive FC (419/+26) up two spots, Surreywood Rangers (415/+16) down a spot, Dumpley Street Morons (413/+18) down a spot, Darcian Greywacke (402/+35) up only a spot despite their MFLS-leading score — such is the competition in Brew City! — and Dudley Street Hooligans (391/+11) down a spot.
  • Cánicas A.C. (25 points/21st place) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (12-Oct-2009 : Week 30)

  • League Cup:  Phoenix TS  are the 2009 League Cup champions. Always a quality team, Phoenix TS had never before finished higher than fourth (in 2004) in the final league session. Congrats to Michael Thomas, well deserved!
    Brew City League Cup
    Phoenix TS

In the final week of the championship, some teams stepped up, and others stepped on their ying-yangs. Three matches were decided by one or two ‘goals’, while three more were not decided at all. (Being draws.)

Phoenix TS (21 points / +67 ‘goal’ diff) were one of five teams to score 164 or 165 times. (The others being first level Clockwork Orange, second level Darcian Greywacke, and third level Duck Butter Bandits and Alewive FC.) At the bottom of the 1st Division, Mike’s Ninja Turtles (10/-44) barely finished above relegated In off the post (9/-102) and Aviators (6/-72), who went seriously off the boil.

In the 2nd Division, Darcian Greywacke (22/+57) and Dumpley Street Morons (21/+19) eased into promotion ahead of Weirder Bremen (16/+82). At the bottom Kingsbridge (10/-8) and Arrows S.C. (9/-10) narrowly avoided the drop, ahead of relegated Pioneer Detasselers (9/-18) and Surreywood Rangers (7/-69). The fall of Pioneer is especially shocking, as they have spent 21 seasons in the top flight.

In the 3rd Division, JC Comets (19/+39) and Duck Butter Bandits (18/+37) swapped spots, but were still promoted. Dudley Street Hooligans (18/+28), who spent the summer in the conference, barely missed out. At the bottom, abandoned Murphdogs (4/-70) won the ‘race’ to replace Turboduck SC in the conference.

  • MFLS Fantasy League: Dynamo Kyiv YCK (616/+26) extended their lead by eight points. They are followed by SDFC Macross (594/+34) up one spot, unclean sheets (593/+17) down a spot, Mohawks FC (574/+14) down a spot, FC Taureau-trois-graines (572/+12) down two spots, Clockwork Orange (569/+22) up two spots, Lowbrow Wanderers SC (566/+22) up three spots, Geckos (560/+11) down a spot, The N Men Return (558/+8) down three spots, and ManaMana (556/+38) up a incredible EIGHT spots! It should some as no surprise, then, that ManaMana’s 38 points was this week’s high score.
  • MFLS Prediction League: Hotspur (451/+3) had an off week, but retain a very healthy lead over second place Alpine Dream (434/+6). Clockwork Orange, who were second, failed to take advantage of Hotspur’s slip, scoring 0 points, and are down a spot. They are followed by Dynamo Salem (427/+3), Dynamo Silver Spring (426/+14) up two spots, Zman Union (425/+3) down a spot, CrewDuty (421/+15) up three spots, Glorydaze (419/+6) down two spots, Giggity (418/+6) down two spots, and Chisquito USA (416/+6) down a spot. High score this week was 21, by Pepsi Pimps and Injuryprone.
  • Miklos Feher Cup: Mohawks FC (574/+14) stayed in first, in the fantasy league, ahead of Clockwork Orange (569/+22) up a spot, Geckos (560/+11) down a spot, Phoenix TS (555/+30) up a spot, Darcian Greywacke (543/+12) down a spot, Weirder Bremen (531/+19), Cánicas A.C. (531/+21) up a spot, Glorydaze (531/+33) up four big spots, Dumpley Street Morons (522/+16), and Dynamo Silver Spring (518/+11) down two spots. Though the final spots are in question, the teams in the final top ten are pretty much set, as rapidly rising Alewive FC are 24 points behind Dynamo Silver Spring.
  • John Thomson Cup: The predictions lead of Clockwork Orange (432/+0) is now under serious threat by Dynamo Silver Spring (426/+14). They are followed by Glorydaze (419/+6) down a spot, Sehome Mariners (406/+9), Top Shelf (401/+6), Surreywood Rangers (399/+17) up a spot, Dumpley Street Morons (395/+9) down a spot, Alewive FC (393/+14), Dudley Street Hooligans (380/+3), and Darcian Greywacke (367/+9).
  • Glorydaze (33 points/4th place), Phoenix TS (30/8), JC Comets (28/12) and Alewive FC (25/22) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (6-Oct-2009 : Week 29)

  • League Cup: In the 1st Division, Phoenix TS moved into the championship spot by edging Glorydaze 17:16, while former leaders Clockwork Orange fell 12:15 to Cánicas A.C. With one week left, Phoenix TS (18 points / +38 ‘goal’ diff), Cánicas A.C. (16/-2) and Clockwork Orange (15/+60) are the only teams with a title hope. That means 2009 will feature the first team outside the traditional Top Shelf-Aviators-Dynamo Silver Spring power axis to win the league since JC Comets in 2004. Aviators are bottom, need to win big, and hope two of the three teams ahead of them lose, to avoid relegation. In the 2nd Division, Darcian Greywacke are promoted after another narrow result, 20:19 over Weirder Bremen. Darcian Greywacke (19/+56) are followed by Dumpley Street Morons (18/+15) and Weirder Bremen (15/+28). None of the teams are relegated for certain, though the bell is tolling for Surreywood Rangers. In the 3rd Division, Duck Butter Bandits (18/+42) lead JC Comets (16/+34), Dudley Street Hooligans (15/+27) and Real Hillsdale (15/+12). The Quackers play the Comets for the title this week. At the bottom, Juice10 and abandoned MurphDogs both lost, so either could yet replace Turboduck on the league bench.
  • MFLS Fantasy League: Dynamo Kyiv YCK (590/+10) held their lead over unclean sheets (576/+13). They are followed by FC Taureau-trois-graines (560/+20) up three spots, SDFC Macross (560/+5), Mohawks FC (560/+20) up three spots, The N Men Return (550/+3) down two spots, Geckos (549/+7) down two spots, Clockwork Orange (547/+12) up a spot, Alpine Dream (546/+17) up two spots, and Lowbrow Wanderers SC (544/+10). Considering some teams scored 9 or 10 points and only dropped a spot, it should come as no surprise that this week’s high score of 30 was by some abandoned team.
  • MFLS Prediction League: With three weeks to go, 2008 champion Hotspur (448/+10) have it on cruise control. They are followed by Clockwork Orange (432/+15), Alpine Dream (428/+13), Dynamo Salem (424/+15) up a spot, Zman Union (422/+11) down a spot, Glorydaze (413/+16) up a spot, Dynamo Silver Spring (412/+21) up four big spots, Giggity (412/+14) down a spot, Chisquito USA (410/+17), CrewDuty (406/+9) down three spots, and Rabid Wolverines (406/+15) up a spot. High score this week was a whopping 31, by Shall Rie Dance?.
  • Miklos Feher Cup: Mohawks FC (560/+20) moved up a spot, to the top of the fantasy table. They are followed by former leaders Geckos (549/+7), Clockwork Orange (547/+12), Darcian Greywacke (531/+20), Phoenix TS (525/+17), Weirder Bremen (512/+19) up two spots, Cánicas A.C. (510/+15), Dynamo Silver Spring (507/+11) down two spots, Dumpley Street Morons (506/+13) down a spot, and Glorydaze (498/+16).
  • John Thomson Cup: Clockwork Orange (432/+15) only lost a point off their lead at the top of the prediction table. They are followed by Glorydaze (413/+16), Dynamo Silver Spring (412/+21), Sehome Mariners (397/+16) up a spot, Top Shelf (395/+10) down a spot, Dumpley Street Morons (386/+10), Surreywood Rangers (382/+6), Alewive FC (379/+6), Dudley Street Hooligans (377/+8), and Darcian Greywacke (358/+14) up a spot.
  • No Brew City sides placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (28-Sep-2009 : Week 28)

  • League Cup: In the 1st Division, Cánicas A.C. threw away their best chance of winning the title, losing 9:30 to Phoenix TS, with the other four top five teams all winning. Clockwrk Orange (15 points/+63 ‘goals’) are now top, followed by Phoenix TS (15/+37), Cánicas A.C. (13/-5), Dynamo Silver Spring (12/+60) and Glorydaze (12/+8). In the 2nd Division, Darcian Greywacke has been walking on thin ice the last few weeks, this week finally surrendering their undefeated record, falling 19:23 to Grass Pitch Please. If Darcian don’t right their ship, they could concievably fall out of the promotion spots, as they are followed by teams on 15, 15, 13 and 12 points. At the bottom, Surreywood Rangers are hanging on by the slimmest thread, needing to win both their final matches and hope for both Pioneer Detasselers and Arrows S.C. to drop points in both their last two matches. The 3rd Division standings were much scrambled, Duck Butter Bandits (15/+33) moving up two spots due to a 37:23 win over previously second place Alewive FC, while former leaders Real Hillsdale (15/+21) fell -4:17 to JC Comets (13/+32).
  • MFLS Fantasy League: Dynamo Kyiv YCK (580/+21) again swapped spots with unclean sheets (563/-1). They are followed by SDFC Macross (555/+34) up three spots, The N Men Return (547/+21), Geckos (542/+18), Mohawks FC (540/+23) up one spot, FC Taureau-trois-graines (540/+8) down three spots, BoulderKronickFC (537/+21), Clockwork Orange (535/+29) up one spot, and Lowbrow Wanderers SC (534/+39) up four spots. High score this week was 39 by Winners and Lowbrow Wanderers SC.
  • MFLS Prediction League: Hotspur (438/+12) extended their lead by three points. Clockwork Orange (417/+10), up one spot, are now second, followed by Alpine Dream (415/+13) up one spot, Zman Union (411/+3) down two spots, Dynamo Salem (409/+12), Giggity (398/+20) up a huge five spots, Glorydaze (397/+6) down a spot, CrewDuty (397/+7), Chisquito USA (393/+10) down a spot, and FC Opie (392/+17) up two spots. High score this week was 21, by cincinnati contomati.
  • Miklos Feher Cup: Geckos (542/+18 points) continue to lead the fantasy table. They are followed by Mohawks FC (540/+23), Clockwork Orange (535/+29), Darcian Greywacke (511/+19), Phoenix TS (508/+30) up two spots, Dynamo Silver Spring (496/+13), Cánicas A.C. (495/+9) down two spots, Dumpley Street Morons (493/+30) up two spots, Weirder Bremen (493/+26), and Glorydaze (482/+17) down a spot.
  • John Thomson Cup: Clockwork Orange (417/+10) maintain a near insurmountable lead in the prediction table. They are followed by Glorydaze (397/+6), Dynamo Silver Spring (391/+17), Top Shelf (385/+12), Sehome Mariners (381/+16) up two spots, Dumpley Street Morons (376/+9), Surreywood Rangers (376/+7) down a spot, Alewive FC (371/+10), Dudley Street Hooligans (369/+8) down a spot, and Mohawks FC (346/+10) up two spots.
  • Duck Butter Bandits (37 points/5th place), Phoenix TS (30/23) and Dumpley Street Morons (30/23) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (22-Sep-2009 : Week 27)

  • League Cup: In the 1st Divisiion Cánicas A.C. are back in first, courtesy of a 25:18 victory over Aviators. Cánicas (13 points / +16 ‘goal’ diff) now lead Clockwork Orange (12/+40) and Phoenix TS (12/+16), the previous leaders falling to third. But with three matches to go, no team is safe from relegation. In the 2nd Division, undefeated Darcian Greywacke won again, edging Pioneer Detasselers 23:20. Darcian (16/+59), obviously top, are followed by Shaolin Mystigods (13/+13) and three teams on 12 points. None has yet insured promotion. In the 3rd Division, leaders Real Hillsdale hammered Juice10 20:1. Real ( 15/+42) leads Alewive FC (12/+41) and Duck Butter Bandits (12/+19). MurphDogs, having gone four months without managerial attention, are bottom.
  • MFLS Fantasy League: After a week in second place, unclean sheets (564/+31) are back in first. The temporary leaders, Dynamo Kyiv YCK (559/+20 points) fell one spot. They are followed by FC Taureau-trois-graines (532/+18) up one spot, The N Men Return (526/+8) down one spot, Geckos (524/+13), SDFC Macross (521/+14) up one spot, Mohawks FC (517/+9) down one spot, BoulderKronickFC (516/+20), Alpine Dream (514/+31) up one spot, and Clockwork Orange (506/+19). The last team in the Top 25, Phoenix TS, is on 478 points. High score this week was FC Reaper’s 43. (It will come as no surprise they are an abandoned team, their last moves coming 10 weeks ago.)
  • MFLS Prediction League: Hotspur (426/+18) maintain their firm grip on the top spot. They are followed by Zman Union (408/+18), Clockwork Orange (407/+24) up two spots, Alpine Dream (402/+18) down one spot, Dynamo Salem (397/+13) down two spots, Glorydaze (391/+19) up one spot, CrewDuty (390/+22) up three spots, Chisquito USA (383/+17) up three spots, Rossmoor Rowdies (381/+9) down two spots, and Rabid Wolverines (379/+13) up one spot. High score this week was 27, notched by Iowa Seniors and FantasyGuruDave.
  • Miklos Feher Cup: The top seven fantasy teams are unchanged, though it did tighten up a bit: Geckos (524/+13 points), Mohawks FC (517/+9), Clockwork Orange (506/+19), Darcian Greywacke (492/+23), Cánicas A.C. (486/+25), Dynamo Silver Spring (483/+25), and Phoenix TS (457/+8). They are followed by Weirder Bremen (467/+32) up one spot, Glorydaze (465/+18) down one spot, and Dumpley Street Morons (463/+28).

They are followed by Dumpley Street Morons (367/+22) up three spots, Sehome Mariners (365/+13) down a spot, Alewive FC (361/+12) down a spot, Dudley Street Hooligans (361/+12) down one spot, and Darcian Greywacke (341/+18) up two spots.
  • For the second week in a row, no Brew City teams placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (14-Sep-2009 : Week 26)

  • League Cup: Teams which put too much emphasis on LA Galaxy players paid the price, while those who bet on red hot Jeff Cunningham reaped the windfall of Dallas’s 6:3 victory in Carson. In the 1st Division, traditional powers Dynamo Silver Spring, Aviators and Top Shelf are all in the bottom half of the table. Top Shelf, especially, is in danger of relegation after getting clobbered by Clockwork Orange, 9:30. Phoenix TS (12 points/+22 ‘goal’ diff) are the new leaders, with previous top team Cánicas A.C. (10/+9) now second. In the 2nd Division, Darcian Greywacke fell from the ranks of the perfect, drawing 5:5 to Shaolin Mystigods. Darcian (12/+53), who remain top, are closely followed by Geckos (12/+36) and Shaolin Mystigods (12/+9). Geckos match with the Monks, this week, will likely determine who goes up, and who stays in the mid-tier. In the 3rd Division, the leaders both won. Real Hillsdale (12/+23) barely ahead of Duck Butter Bandits (12/+21). At the bottom, abandoned MurphDogs (4/-29) managed to beat Juice10 13:10, to move ahead of Van der Sara FC (3/-47).
  • MFLS Fantasy League: Heading into the final six weeks of the MLS season, the top ten are Dynamo Kyiv YCK (539/+22 points), unclean sheets (533/+11), who were first, The N Men Return (518/+11), FC Taureau-trois-graines (514/+20), Geckos (511/+33), Mohawks FC (508/+2), SDFC Macross (507/+42), BoulderKronickFC (496/+9), Clockwork Orange (487/+30) and Alpine Dream (483/+6). By way of comparison, last year’s top team with six weeks to go, FC Chunkers, had 609 points. In 2007, with five weeks to go, RevSolutions had 693. In other words, scoring seems to have returned to its normal levels after the highs of the past few years.
  • MFLS Prediction League: With six weeks to go, last year’s fantasy/prediction double winning Hotspur (408/+16) are still top, and on pace to beat their 2008 score of 451 points. Hotspur are followed by Zman Union (390/+16), Alpine Dream (384/+14), Dynamo Salem (384/+19), Clockwork Orange (383/+19), Giggity (373/+15), Glorydaze (372/+22), Rossmoor Rowdies (372/+16), Hurling Cuervo (371/+14) and CrewDuty (368/+18). High score this week was the Sandy FC’ 30. (Despite predicting picking LA 3:1, when the Galaxy ended up losing 3:6 to Dallas.)
  • Miklos Feher Cup: With six weeks to go, Geckos (511/+33 points) moved top of the Brew City fantasy competition, followed by former leaders Mohawks FC (508/+2), Clockwork Orange (487/+30), Darcian Greywacke (469/+5), Cánicas A.C. (461/+5), Dynamo Silver Spring (458/+3), Phoenix TS (457/+8), Glorydaze (447/+5), Dumpley Street Morons (435/+10) and Weirder Bremen (435/+9).

  • League Cup: In the 1st Division, the top three sides all lost, and the bottom three all won, tightening up the race at both ends of the table. With so many teams so tight at the top, it follows that there is a wide gap in quality to the bottom half of the table. Likewise in the 3rd Division. Arrows S.C. (18/+58) are top, folllowed by Real Hillsdale (15/+59), Dumpley Street Morons (15/+38) and Van der Sara FC (15/+27).

  • Mohawks (43 points / 2nd place), Clockwork Orange (34/16), Top Shelf (32/18) and Cánicas A.C. (32/18) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25. It was the first time this season Brew City put four teams on the leaderboard. (Three teams had made on three previous occasions.)

In Group G, despite getting off the schneid, 31:13, and being the week’s high scorer, Sehome Mariners are stil bottom. Kingsbridge remain top. With two group games to go, no team has been eliminated from advancing.
  • League Cup: Dynamo Silver Spring have locked in the Spring Championship, shutting down Glorydaze, 11:-7. Dynamo can complete a perfect season by defeating desperate multi-titlist Aviators. The three teams still in the relegation hunt are Mike’s Ninja Turtles (6 points / -29 ‘goals’), Weirder Bremen (6/-41) and Aviators (6/-87). In the 2nd Division, Darcian Greywacke (18/+49) moved from third to first on a 24:15 defeat of Geckos. The other teams with hopes of promotion are Kingsbridge (15/+52) and Geckos (15/+46). At the bottom, Alewive FC (3/-66) are relegated. Any of Cánicas A.C. (12/+3), Shaolin Mystigods (12/+1), JC Comets (12/-6), Duck Butter Bandits (10/-17) or MurphDogs (9/-39) could yet join them in the drop. In the 3rd Division, the top seven teams all have a chance of promotion. Surreywood Rangers (18/+56) continue to lead that race. Meanwhile, the bottom three, fighting to avoid taking Appleton Aarhus’s place off the chart, are Sehome Mariners (9/+4), Arrows S.C. (9/-17) and Dudley Street Hooligans (6/-34).
  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: In Group A, cincinnati contomati (#8 seed) have advanced. In group B, Top Shelf (#3) and Causmos (#18) have advanced. In Group C, Pioneer Detasselers (unseeded) and unclean sheets (#10) have advanced. In Group D, SDFC Macross (scholarship) have advanced. In Group E, the standings remain unchanged, despite the top two teams both losing, Headhunter FC 1:4 to Newport FC (the only team to start Eddie Lewis) and Plattsburgh United 0:1 to Aviators. Headhunter FC (#24) have advanced. In Group F, the Group of Death, Dynamo Silver Spring move top on a 1:0 defeat of Avengers, despite Dynamo playing a 5-3-2. Alewive FC — who were leading two weeks ago — are now bottom. No Group F team has advanced, and none has been eliminated. The currents standings are Dynamo Silver Spring (9 points / -2 goal diff), Avengers (7/+3), Portland Red Tide (7/-1) and Alewive FC (5/0). In next week’s final round of games, Dynamo Silver Spring host Portland Red Tide, while Alewive FC are home to Avengers.
  • Sehome Mariners (31 points / 17th place) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (12-May-2009 : Week 8)

  • FA Cup: Halfway through the group stage, four teams still have perfect records: Group C-leading Pioneer Detasselers (9 points / +22 ‘goal’ diff), Group D-leading Phoenix TS (9/+26), Group G-leading Kingsbridge (9/+14) and Group G bottom feeders Sehome Mariners (0/-34). Perfection takes many forms. The other group leaders are Appleton Aarhus (A), Mohawks (B), Turboduck SC (E) and In off the post (F).
  • League Cup: Eight matches were decided by three or fewer ‘goals’. Blowout of the Week was this week’s high scorer, Turboduck SC defeating the week’s low scorer, Juice10, 36:1. In the 1st Division, Dynamo Silver Spring (21 points / +66 ‘goal diff) are Spring Champions in all but name, as they lead second place In off the post (15/+18) by six points with only two matches to play. Aviators won for the second straight week, but are still among the the three teams competing to beat the the drop, along with Weirder Bremen and Mike’s Ninja Turtles. In the 2nd Division, there are three teams on 15 points: Kingsbridge (15/+59), Geckos (15/+55) and Darcian Greywacke (15/+40). Geckos play Darcian this upcoming week. Alewive FC are still glued to the bottom spot, despite outscoring five other teams in the division. In the 3rd Division, Surreywood Rangers (18/+80) are on the cusp of promotion. They are followed by Pioneer Detasselers (15/+44), Juice10 (12/-23) and Van der Sara FC (12/-23).
  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: In Group A, cincinnati contomati sealed advancement to the knockout stage with two matches to play, as they are on 10 points, and can finish no worse than third. (The top two teams in each group, plus the four best third place teams, advance.) In Group B, Top Shelf (6 points / +2 goal diff) continue to edge Causmos (6/+1). In Group C, Pioneer Detasselers (9/+4) extended their lead over second place unclean sheets (5/-1) by blowing them out 4:1. In Group D, SDFC Macross (9/+2) moved top, exchanging places with now second Phoenix TS (6/+2). In Group E, Headhunter FC (10/+3) also exchanged places with Plattsburgh United (7/+3). The two best matches of the week were in Group F, where the top two teams both lost, former #1 Alewive FC 4:5 to former #4 Dynamo Silver Spring, and Portand Red Tide 3:6 to Avengers, who are now top.
  • JC Comets (36 points / 21st place), Turboduck SC (36/21) and Dynamo Silver Spring (36/21) all placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (5-May-2009 : Week 7)

  • FA Cup: Appleton Aarhus continue to lead Group A, despite losing 13:17 to Dynamo Silver Spring. Likewise Turboduck SC in Group E, who are top despite being hammered -2:17 by Geckos. The new group leaders are Phoenix TS (D), who defeated Van der Sara FC 15:2, and Kingsbridge (G) who defeated Sehome Mariners 20:14. Group F has the greatest disparity, as two teams are on six points, while the other two are on zero: In off the post in first, followed by Weirder Bremen. Due to a schedule quirk, IOTP and Weirder do not meet until week 9.
  • League Cup: In the 1st Division, there was much shuffling, but the top and bottom spots remain the same: Dynamo Silver Spring (18 points / +64 ‘goal’ diff) are still perfect, having eased by In off the post 17:9, while Aviators are still bottom, but no longer pointless, having edged Phoenix TS 19:15. In the 2nd Division, there was some odd symmetry, as Cánicas A.C. lost -6:16 to MurphDogs, Grass Pitch Please drew -1:-1 with Duck Butter Bandits, and Darcian Greywacke defeated JC Comets 9:-9. Geckos (15/+58) lead the middle tier over Kingsbridge (12/+58). Proving there is no justice in the world, Alewive FC are bottom, despite outscoring the three teams above them … combined. In the 3rd Division, if you thought the Real Hillsdale’s -2:-6 snoozefest with Cánicas A.C. in FA Cup Group D was drudgery, then the Stupor Bowl was Arrows S.C. losing -8:-2 to Turboduck SC. The top four places are unchanged: Surreywood Rangers (15/+78), followed by Pioneer Detasselers (12/+42), Juice10 (12/+12) and Arrows S.C. (9/0).
  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: The scores were very low this week, with many 1:0, 1:1 and 2:1 results, most of the goals coming from Pappa and Donovan. There are no more perfect teams, on nine points. cincinnati contomati (7 points / +3 goal diff) lead Group A. Top Shelf (5/+2) and Causmos (5/+1) lead Group B. Pioneer Detasselers (6/+1) lead Group C. Phoenix TS (6/+3) and SDFC Macross (6/+1) lead Group D. Plattsburgh United (7/+4) and Headhunter FC (7/+2) lead Group E. The biggest surprise remains Group F, where Alewive FC (5/+2) continue to maintain sole posession of the top spot, despite their second straight draw, 1:1 with Avengers.
  • After going 3+ seasons without a MFLS Weekly Top 25 appearance, Surreywood Rangers (28 points / 7th place) have now done it twice in five weeks.

Brew City News (28-Apr-2009 : Week 6)

  • League Cup: Halfway through the season, the contenders have begun separating from the pretenders. In the 1st Division, Dynamo Silver Spring are the only remaining perfect team, leading on 15 points and +56 ‘goal’ difference. In off the post (12/+23) and Glorydaze (9/+28) follow. At the bottom, Aviators (0/-80) are the league’s only team without a point. The lower divisions had a number of 30+ ‘goal’ blowouts. In the 2nd Division, Kingsbridge mowed Grass Pitch Please 41:3, while Darcian Greywacke whacked MurphDogs 38:-3. Geckos (12/+44) are top, followed by five teams on nine points. In the 3rd Division, Surreywood Rangers moved from fourth to first — despite the top two teams winning — by spanking Van der Sara FC 42:-3. Surreywood Rangers (12/+57) are followed by Pioneer Detasselers (12/+47) and Juice10 (12/+33).
  • FA Cup: The FA Cup kicked off. Many of the League Cup winners lost their FA Cup matches, while many of the League Cup losers consoled themselves with FA Cup wins. Match of the week was Pioneer Detasselers winning away, 58:42 over Surreywood Rangers, in Group C. Early group leaders are Appleton Aarhus (A), Mohawks (B), Pioneer Detasselers (C), Cánicas A.C. (D), Turboduck SC (E), In off the post (F), and Darcian Greywacke (G).
  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: Match of the week was Pioneer Detasselers 5:3 away win over GameCocks, in Group C. Houston Dynamo and SDFC Macross were the only teams blanked on the week. cincinnati contomati (A) and Phoenix TS (D) are the only teams on a perfect six points after two rounds of play. Other group leaders are Top Shelf (B), Stonebury United (C), Plattsburgh United (E) and, shockingly, Alewive FC (F). Indeed, Mug boffins are unsure if in 10 years of Mug pours, Alewive FC have ever before led a group. Especially after two weeks.
  • Pioneer Detasselers (58 points / 2nd place) and Mohawks FC (53/5) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (22-Apr-2009 : Week 5)

  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: Group play kicked off, with the teams who scored mostly scoring two goals, either through McBride or Cooper. Only Phoenix TS with three, and Alewive FC with four, scored more. Early group leaders are cincinnati contomati (A), Real New Britski (B), Stonebury United (C), Phoenix TS (D), Newport FC (E) and Alewive FC (F).
  • FA Cup: The FA Cup prepares to kick off in week 6, as the final 28 teams were settled. (The bottom three teams in the MFLS division table failing to qualify.) The bottom five teams were #27 Darcian Greywacke (32 points), #28 Weirder Bremen (31), #29 Aviators (26), #30 Duck Butter Bandits (10) and #31 JC Comets (-4). The seven groups were then finalized. The highlight is likely Group C, which has a combined 42 years of BCFA experience, with founding members Alewive FC (1999), Pioneer Detasselers (1999) and Top Shelf (1999) joined by ‘new boys’ Surreywood Rangers (2001).
  • League Cup: Only four weeks into the season, there was much shuffling of the standings. In the 1st Division, Dynamo Silver Spring moved top on a 26:6 shellacking of Weirder Bremen. Dynamo are the only team in the league with a perfect 12 points. At the opposite end of the spectrum are Aviators, who have zero points. Despite improving their ‘offense’, Aviators lost 6:16 to Clockwork Orange, who moved from ninth to sixth. In the 2nd Division, Geckos leaped from fifth to first on a 23:-2 hiding of Kingsbridge. Cánicas A.C. dropped to second after losing 13:19 to last place Alewive FC. In the 3rd Division, there are five teams on nine points: Juice10 (9 points / +26 ‘goals’), Pioneer Detasselers (9/+17), Arrows S.C. (9/+13), Surreywood Rangers (9/+12) and Real Hillsdale (9/+9). This naturally means there are not a whole lot of points in the bottom half of the division, and indeed Dudley Street Hooligans have zero, leading the charge to replace Appleton Aarhus on the Summer sideline.

Brew City News (15-Apr-2009)

  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: In third playin round, fourth extratime, last gasp quiz question tiebreak … Kingsbridge was the first to correctly answer JEF United Chiba, thus advancing over Elastic Norsemen.

Brew City News (14-Apr-2009 : Week 4)

  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: The final playin round was conducted. Headhunter FC, SDFC Macross, ManaMana, Newport FC (high scorer of the week, with 4), Portland Red Tide and Pioneer Detasselers were the out-right winners. Real New Britski drew Mohawks 1:1, but advance on the first tie-break, as Mohawks keeper (Busch, 3) gave up more goals than Britski’s (Frei, 1). The final match is going to yet another fourth tie-break quiz question, after Elastic Norsemen drew Kingsbridge 2:2. The first extra period is least goals given up by keepers (both had Busch), the second extra period is total team PKs (neither had Alvarez), and the third is total team assists (Norseman had 1 from Mapp, while Kingsbridge had 1 from Soumare).

  • League Cup: In the 1st Division, the leaders remain Top Shelf (9 points / +29 ‘goal’ diff) and Dynamo Silver Spring (9/+17), while In off the post (6/-4) move into show from sixth on a 15:10 victory over Glorydaze. Aviators lost again, and are without a point. In the 2nd Division, the top three shuffled spots. Cánicas A.C. (9/+32) are currently top, followed by Kingsbridge (6/+30) and Shaolin Mystigods (6/+21). Three other teams are also on six points. In the 3rd Division, Pioneer Detasselers (9/+23) move top, while previous leaders Surreywood Rangers (6/+6) fell to fourth after being humiliated -5:15 by Turboduck SC.

Brew City News (8-Apr-2009)

  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: In second playin round, fourth extratime, last gasp quiz question tiebreaks … Real New Britski was the first to correctly answer Fiorentina and Ujpest, thus advancing over Weirder Bremen. Also, Cánicas A.C. advanced over The Irons by being first to correctly explain how Brooklyn Beckham got his name.

Brew City News (7-Apr-2009 : Week 3)

  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: The second of three playin rounds was conducted. Despite the enormous amount of goals on offer — both Casey and Findley with hat tricks, 22 overall — a shocking 13 of 16 Mug teams had cleansheets. The outright winners were Shaolin Mystigods (who had Casey), SDFC Macross and Pioneer Detasselers. Of the five matches which ended 0:0, all ten teams had Busch as keeper, causing a second extratime. As the second tiebreak is PKs, and none of the teams managed to score, a third extratime (total team assists) was necessary in all five matches. Ah, I think we might be getting somewhere … Newport FC defeated Partizan Bellevue 1:0, Dudley Street Hooligans defeated Spanish Girls 2:0, and Kingsbridge defeated Hometown Soccer Club 3:0. Yes, the other two matches went to a fourth extratime. What is that tie break? A last gasp quiz question!

  • League Cup: In the 1st Division, Top Shelf continue to lead, having defeated Mike’s Ninja Turtles 12:9. At the bottom, Aviators posted negative points for the second week in a row, getting hammered -4:24 by Mohawks. BCFA boffins believe Aviators double negative is unprecented. In the 2nd Division, the top three teams all lost, while this week’s high scorer, Shaolin Mystigods, defeated Alewive FC 35:9. Shaolin top. In the 3rd Division, Surreywood Rangers move from third to first, while three of this year’s newcomers are bottom: Dumpley Street Morons, Turboduck SC and Dudley Street Hooligans, on a combined 3 points and -48 ‘goal’ difference.
  • Shaolin Mystigods (35 points / 16th place) and Surreywood Rangers (34/21) placed in the MFLS Weekly Top 25.

Brew City News (2-Apr-2009 : Week 2)

  • Nationwide Super Cup: Top Shelf went into the second leg with a 14-point deficit, having lost 26:12 to Clockwork Orange. Top Shelf tripled their score in the second leg, but the 36:30 win was not enough to overcome Clockwork’s excellent predictions, making  Clockwork Orange  the first champion of the combined Brew City-Nationwide Premier League fantasy-prediction competition. Congratulations Jason Benfield!

  • League Cup: The Spring Championship kicked off. Top Shelf are in their customary place atop the 1st Division, having defeated In off the post 18:6. In the 2nd Division, Geckos set out their marker, defeating JC Comets 18:4. In the 3rd Division, Real Hillsdale are top, having defeated Turboduck SC 18:7.
  • Mug’O’Suds Invitational: The Mug began pouring with the first playin round. Game of the week was The Irons triple-extratime victory over Lowbrow Wanderers SC. Normal time ended 2:2. First extratime saw the teams still level on least goals given up by keeper, as each had Pickens with 1. Second extratime was also inconclusive, with both teams scoring a PK via Schelotto. The Irons finally emerged victorius after the third extratime, as they had two assists (Alonso) to none for Lowbrow. Other winners were Spanish Girls, Shaolin Mystigods, Dudley Street Hooligans, Cánicas A.C., Pioneer Detasselers, Newport FC and SDFC Macross, the week’s high scorer with 5.
